Musical Interlude

Lund International Student Choir at Kulturen

Our Swedish choir leader seems to enjoy arranging opportunities for us to perform and socialize together. I suspect he also holds the goal of teaching us Swedish language and culture. This weekend he organized a retreat at a scouting camp in Österlen, Skane, a little over and hour from Lund.

During our regular practices Gösta accompanies us on piano but for these offsite events he uses an accordion. This changes the dynamics a bit and I would say it lessens the release of happy hormones, at least for me, but it’s likely the only way to go for a mobile choir. He is a very talented musician and several choir members also brought along instruments. Although I only stayed the the day, I heard there were spontaneous dance sessions during the long weekend, lots of singing, and even a visit to the spa and lakeside sauna.

Many of us brought books and projects to work on, while others chose board games and cozy chats in front of the fire. Some of the more ambitious projects received a lot of admiration, such as the embroidered window topper and knit sweater.

On Saturday afternoon most of the group ventured out for a walk around the lake and the former grounds of Gyllebo Manor.

One of the choir members, whose family lives in Lund, happen to have a “sommarstuga” on the same Red Lake. They invited us for fika so we hiked over and sang a few tunes for them and they generously treated us all to fika and a tour of their place.

Shout out to Bryant for making the drive out on Saturday evening to bring a few of us back to Lund, though I was sorry to miss what looked to be an excellent dinner and evening program. This morning on my bakery run, a fellow choir member and I recognized one another. Choir is a great way to get to know more Lundabor (people who live in Lund). Luckily there will be another chance this summer to join in a LISC retreat!

For some of the photos in this post I used a new watercolor feature by PIC-COLLAGE.
