The Icelandic tradition of the Christmas book flood has been part of our holiday celebration for the past 10 or so years. We started taking the girls to a local book shop to choose their own books on or around Christmas Eve as a way to support independent book sellers. Wild Rumpus, Red Balloon, Addendum Books, The Storied Owl…Now we all look forward to buying a new book or two and reading cozily together. Reading through the years…
This is one tradition that was easy to manage and which the girls continue to enjoy even as they grow up… this year was especially relaxed as we didn’t travel. We spent a lot of time doing homely things and occasionally getting out for a hike or a movie.
The weather has been damp and dreary, but the fog created a mystical atmosphere at Skrylle Naturreservat as the dark crept up on us around 3:45 on Christmas Day. We did a bit of shopping in Malmö (cream of mushroom soup and refried beans from Taste of Britain) some international items from Lucu Foods, and tried the famous brunch at Nam Do. We also managed a quick stop at the Jakriborg Julmarknad, in a village not far from Lund which is a medieval replica in the Baltic style.
