Melissa’s 50th birthday gave us an excuse for another Øresunds Bro crossing and a day of adventure with said birthday girl, Erin and Glen, who was introduced to the American group awhile back (along with his Swedish husband, Anders). Glen and Anders met in Copenhagen and have spent a lot of time there so he acted as a local guide of sorts, showing us some of his favorite places and sharing tips on navigating the city, buying groceries, flødebuller, and even some Danish pronunciation!

It was opening day for Reffen, a harborside street food market. We found a pleasant table with great views and each of us chose food and drink to suit our fancies then caught up with each other on all the news.

A long-awaited tour of Søndermarkens Cisterns Gallery in Frederiksberg (just outside of Copenhagen) did not disappoint. Prior to meeting up with Glen, we three walked around the adjoining park, scoped out views of the zoo, ropes course and the grounds around “cisternernes”.

Once a large school group finished their visit, we made our way down into the underground water cisterns-turned-art gallery. As our eyes adjusted to the darkness we carefully traversed the tunnels. The unusual atmosphere makes for an intriguing gallery experience with the visitor being immersed in the slightly spooky former water reservoir chambers.

All of us appreciated the current exhibit: Psychoshere. My worries about accidentally stepping off the raised walkways into the few inches of water on the bottom of the cisterns was unwarranted, though I did walk with deliberation and used my flashlight a few times. After the Cisternerne and lunch Glen showed us around a bit… here’s a gallery of highlights

I made note of a place to visit… Copenhill, urban mountain. We haven’t been yet but there’s a short video in the link. The sledding looks fun to me and of course the views must be amazing.

Melissa and I did not have to rush home as soon as Erin and Glen so we took a scenic route back to the train, stopping along the way for a glass of wine under a bridge on the harbor, and we even climbed inside a giant Kaleidoscope art installation!

It turned out to be one of the nicest days I’ve spent on the other side of bron because there was very little wind and the temperature was just right. My coat was a bit too warm but tolerable to keep on. Hopefully Melissa enjoyed it as much as we enjoyed welcoming her to club 50+
